Parshat Lekh L’kha

8 Heshvan, 5774/October 12, 2013
Triennial Cycle Year I: Genesis 12:1-13:18
Humash Etz Hayim, page 69
Haftarah, Isaiah 40:27-41:16, page 94

  1. (12:1-9) God speaks to Abram (Abraham’s original name), “Go to the land I will show you.” Abram, his wife Sarai (Sarah), and his nephew Lot travel from Haran to Canaan. Abram sets up altars to God at Shechem, and near Bethel.
  2. (12:10-20) Because of a famine, Abram goes to Egypt. He lies, saying Sarai is his sister. Pharaoh takes her into his house. God brings plagues upon Pharaoh. Pharaoh angrily sends Abram and Sarai away.
  3. (13:1-13) Lot’s herdsmen and Abram’s herdsmen quarrel. Abram generously allows Lot to choose an area for grazing. He chooses the fertile Jordan valley, near Sodom. Abram gets the rest of Canaan.
  4. (13:14-18) God renews the grant to Abram of Canaan. Abram settles near Hebron.
