Parashat Vayeshev

20 Kislev, 5774 / November 23, 2013
Triennial Cycle Year I: Genesis 37:1-36
Humash Etz Hayim, page 226
Haftarah: Amos 2:6-3:8, page 246

  1. (37:1-11) The Joseph story begins. Jacob favored Joseph and gave him a “coat of many colors.” Joseph’s dreams indicate that his brothers will serve him some day. Not surprisingly,  Joseph’s brothers hate and envy him.
  2.  (37:12-36) Joseph’s brothers plot to kill him. At Reuben’s urging, they do not kill him immediately, but cast him into a pit. Judah then persuades them to sell him into slavery. Joseph is taken to Egypt. Jacob’s sons deceive him into believing that a wild animal killed Joseph.
