 Parashat Kora

23 Sivan 5774/June 21, 2014
Triennial Cycle Year I: Numbers 16:1-17:15
Etz Ḥayim Ḥumash, page 860
Haftarah: 1 Samuel 11:14-12:22, page 876

  1. (16:1-15) Korah and his faction rebel. Moses sends for Korah’s allies, Dathan and Abiram, to appear before him, and they refuse.
  2. (16:16-35) A test: Moses and Korah will each offer incense before God, to see whose God accepts. The earth swallows up Korah and his followers. A fire consumes the 250 rebellious Levites.
  3. (17:1-8) As a warning to future generations, the rebels’ copper incense pans are made into a covering for the altar.
  4. (17:9-15) The Israelites keep complaining, so a plague breaks out. Aaron offers incense to expiate their sins, preventing further deaths.
