29 Nissan, 5779 / May 4, 2019
Triennial Cycle III: Lev. 16:1-34 Ḥumash Etz Ḥayim pg 679
Haftarah: 1 Samuel 20:18-42, page 1216
- (16:1-28) The order of worship on Yom Kippur, beginning with instructions to the High Priest about his entry into the Holy of Holies, and the sacrifices for that day. Most notable was the practice of the scapegoat. Two goats were brought to the High Priest. One was called the goat for Adonai, the other the goat for Azazel. The goat for Adonai was sacrificed to God. The High priest placed his hands on the goat for Azazel and said the confession on behalf of the entire Jewish people. The goat for Azazel was then led away into the wilderness where it was killed.
- (16:29-34) Laws and practices of Yom Kippur, including the command to fast.
