Led by Sheryl Rattner
This Netiv session is held concurrently with the Musaf service in the main sanctuary. It examines the history and ideas in Judaism behind memorializing our departed loved ones. We will conduct a close reading of Yizkor, the Jewish memorial prayer service, along with some of the insights and interpretations on the importance of Yizkor, from a wide range of Jewish scholars. We will examine the customs surrounding the Yizkor prayer, and then address the question of why memory – ours and God’s – is so central to the Jewish people.

Kabbalah as a Tool Toward Spiritual Transformation and Teshuvah – Part II

Thursday, October 2, 12:00–1:30 pm
Led by Joseph Bendahan
The days leading to Yom Kippur is a propitious period when we are granted a special opportunity to cleanse our souls and elevate our spirits. In Kabbalah, every misdeed creates a barrier between us and God, which can only be mended through sincere return. This process involves three key elements: recognition of wrongdoing, remorse for actions taken, and resolve for future change. Joseph Bendahan returns for a second look at the tools for transformation. We will review basic concepts of Kabbalah, and proceed to introduce new topics relevant to the journey of self-improvement. This session will include a short meditation as one tool towards individual transformation. This talk will be suitable for all adults and teens 13+ including those who attended Joseph’s lively session last year, as well as those who did not.

RABBI STUDY SESSION (Sanctuary)

Thursday, October 2,  3:15–4:30 pm
As we approach 5786, it’s hard not to feel trepidation and concern. It is hard not to feel that the world is spinning out of control. Yet the Jewish tradition asks us to approach a new year with hope and optimism. This year, during the break on Yom Kippur, Rabbis Kunin and Roller will help us to find hope for the future. They will delve into traditional and modern Jewish texts which exemplify perseverance even at times which seem dark and dangerous.
