Haftarah: Amos 9:7-15, page 706

  1. (17:8-9) Karet, a punishment from God for sacrificing anywhere but the Tabernacle altar.
  2. (17:10-16) The prohibitions of eating blood and of eating an animal that has died of natural causes (nevelah) or been torn (trefah).
  3. (18:1-5) a warning to keep away from all the practices of the idolaters and to follow God’s laws.
  4. (18:6-30) The categories of forbidden marriage and other types of forbidden sexual relationship.
  5. (19:1-14) Kedoshim opens with the words: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. “Rabbi Chiyya taught: This section was spoken before the assembly of the entire people, because to a large extent it contains the essentials of the Torah.” (Midrash Vayikra Rabbah).
