Parashat Balak

14 Tamuz, 5777/July 8, 2017
Triennial Cycle Year I: Numbers 22:2-38
Etz Ḥayim Ḥumash, page 894
Haftarah: Micah 5:6-6:8, page 914

  1. (22:2-7) Balak, King of Moab, invites Balaam, who has the power to bless and curse, to help him by cursing the Israelites.
  2. (22:8-20) Balak’s messengers deliver his proposal to Balaam, who tells them he must consult with God before he can decide. God first tells him not to go. Balak sends a second delegation, whom Balaam also refuses. God tells Balaam that he may go, but whatever I command you, that shall you do.
  3. (22:21-38) Balaam sets out riding his donkey. On the way, an angel of the Lord appears. He does not see it, but his donkey does, and refuses to move. Balaam beats it to force it to go on. After being beaten three times, the donkey speaks, complaining of this ill treatment. God then opens Balaam’s eyes so that he sees the angel, who also rebukes Balaam for beating the donkey. Balaam offers to turn back. The angel tells him to go, but warns him again only to say what God tells him. Balak meets Balaam at the border, and tells him that he can only utter the word that God puts into my mouth.

JFS SV Equipped to Learn Backpack Drive
Now through July 26
Join us in helping needy students be equipped to learn
Congregation Beth David is once again partnering with Jewish Family Services to collect backpacks and school supplies for preschool through adult learners. With your help, these students will be off a great start to a successful 2017-18  school year! There are several ways you and your family can help.  You can donate a full backpack for a needy student based from a requested supply list, you can purchase Target gift cards, or buy from JFS’ online registry.  Check JFS’ web site for details.  Any questions or if you would like to volunteer with your children (over 10 years old please) email Lori  .

Become a JFS Friendly Visitor — Make A Real Difference in the Life of An Isolated Senior!
JFS is in need of empathetic and committed volunteers to become Friendly Visitors.  A JFS Friendly Visitor is matched up with an isolated senior for a weekly or every other week visit and they form lasting friendships with the senior. Our Friendly Visitors say that they get so much more than they give. Volunteers must be amenable to JFS’ screening process. Email Lori Cinnamon.
