Bryan Ferguson, Chairman (408-832-3250)
The Social Action Committee is excited to be involved in several projects that provide assistance in our local community.
“Blanketing the Community”
From Thanksgiving to Pesach, we’re putting our efforts to “Blanketing the Community” by providing new and gently used blankets to those in need in Santa Clara County. Both homemade and purchased blankets will be grateful accepted. There’s a great need for blankets over the Winter and early Spring. We will be collecting blankets during events at the Synagogue. Seema Cicerone (408-741-5466 ) is overseeing this project, from receiving blankets at Beth David to delivery at the Sacred Heart Community Center in San Jose. She welcomes others to share in this rewarding hands-on experience.
Christmas Meal at Shelter for Homeless Families in San Jose
We’re also continuing our tradition of providing and serving a Christmas meal at the EHC Lifebuilders homeless shelter in San Jose. This is a very successful event that Social Action has carried out for number of years. We need helping hands to make the meal and donations to buy the food. Please contact Dorothy Dorsay or Judy Levin to cook a portion of the meal ahead of time or contribute toward buying the food.
Louis Chevlen Memorial Blood Drive
Social Action also leads a yearly Louis Chevlen Memorial blood drive. It will be held Tuesday December 15, 3:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Beth David. Please contact Mike Harris if you can help on the day of the blood drive.
Rotating Shelter
Social Action works with West Valley Community Services to provide a rotating shelter for about fifteen homeless men while they search for work. Beth David provides housing in June. Ronnie Gordon leads efforts to obtain needed licensing and permits, arrange for meals (served at the Church of the Ascension) and sign up greeters who welcome the men to the shelter. Contact Ronnie to get involved with coordinating the Rotating Shelter effort.
Other Social Action Projects
The Social Action Committee is very interested in hearing about your ideas for projects that would help those in need locally and beyond. Please contact Bryan Ferguson (408-832-3250)
