NOTEN YAD UPDATE
October 2010
The Noten Yad Committee at Congregation Beth David has decided to work on aspects of issues surrounding senior care.
Prior to the summer, committee members as well as other congregants held house meetings with fellow congregants to elicit what issues in the community were important to them (listening campaign). After tabulating the data from all these meetings, the overriding theme was a concern for seniors regarding socialization, ability to obtain appropriate services, and maintaining independence.
The Noten Yad Committee has been doing research into what services already exist for seniors and how we can make a difference by filling in the gaps. Our research led us to something called Virtual Retirement Villages, which are organizations that act as clearinghouses for services for seniors or those with certain needs. These organizations have been in operation for a while in the Boston and Washington DC areas. There is also a “village” in San Francisco and one on the mid-peninsula.
Noten Yad, along with a committee from Shir Hadash, is working towards organizing and implementing a village for seniors in the south bay area.
To learn more about Virtual Retirement Villages, there is an informational meeting about them at Congregation Shir Hadash on October 10th that is open to the public.
For more information, you are welcome to email us at notenyad@beth-david.org, or call any of the committee members. If you think this is a project you could help implement or are interested in participating even in a limited capacity, we would appreciate hearing from you.
