| Pirkei Avot Discussion Group: NEW–First Session Monday, Feb 8, 7:30 pm Study “Perkei Avot”, a tractate in the Talmud that contains the ethical wisdom of our forefathers –The plan for this class is to use a basic Pirkei Avot text with commentary and use a weekly topic based discussion format, led by a facilitator, which would rotate among those wishing to lead a session. Additional texts and web-sites that can be used to enrich the discussion have been identified. Sessions are free. |
| Reading and Understanding Hebrew Prayers IA: BEGINNING CLASS – First Session Wednesday, Feb 10, 11:45am-12:45 pm; last session in mid May. For those who wish to improve their understanding of the Amidah (Shemoneh Esrei), the heart of every synagogue service. You will develop confidence in reading and understanding the core prayer of our liturgy. We will use multiple sources to identify the origin and meaning of the Amidah, noting how its structure evolved over the centuries. You will learn the customs of prayer: e.g. how to stand, when to bow, and the “etiquette” of vocalizing. | Talmud Study with Rabbi Schonbrun: ONGOING CLASS – Fridays 8:30-9:30 am through the end of JuneCome explore the “Sea of the Talmud” with us. Study Tractate Berachot, which deals with prayers, ritual, spirituality, theology, and leads to lively side discussions on more general Jewish practices and ethics. You can join this ongoing class and get up to speed in studying the source text of Judaism. Newcomers are not only welcomed, they are nurtured! This class is free. |
| Modern Hebrew IIIB: CONTINUING CLASS – First session Wednesday, Feb 10, 10:00 – 11:30 am through end of June.This daytime course is designed for those who wish to improve their Hebrew skills and increase their comfort level in reading, vocalizing, and understanding general Hebrew texts as well as Hebrew prayers Instructor: Chuck Taubman: nambuat@comcast.net or 408.257.3251 Prerequisites: Knowledge of basic Hebrew grammar and ability to read, pronounce, and (with the aid of a Hebrew/English dictionary) translate simple Hebrew stories.
