“You Shall Eat and Be Satisfied”: The Promise of Sustenance
Rabbi Philip R. Ohriner
From Birkat Hamazon, the blessing recited after eating bread
Blessed are You, Lord, Sovereign of the universe, who sustains the entire world with goodness, kindness and mercy. God gives food to all creatures, for the Lord’s love is everlasting. In God’s abundant goodness, God has not, nor will God ever withhold sustenance from us. For the sake of the Lord’s great name, God sustains all, does good for all, and provides food for all the creatures God created. Blessed are You, God, the provider of food for all.
Deuteronomy 8:10
You shall eat, be satisfied, and bless the Lord your God for the good land that the Lord has given you.
Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, “Gifts to the poor” 7:6
If a poor person who is not known in the area says, “I am hungry; please feed me,” they do not check into his background to see if he is dishonest. Rather, they feed him immediately.
Babylonian Talmud tractate Pesachim 118a
Rabbi Yochanan said: “Providing for a person’s sustenance is twice as difficult as the suffering of a woman in childbirth for while regarding a woman in childbirth it is written, ‘with etzev (suffering) you shall bear children (Gen. 3:16)’ with regard to providing for man’s sustenance it is written, ‘through etzavon (sufferings) you will eat (Gen. 3:17)’”. Rabbi Yochanan said: “Providing for a person’s sustenance is more difficult than redemption, for regarding redemption it is written, ‘The angel who redeems me from all evil (Gen. 48:16)’ indicating an ordinary angel (will redeem us), whereas regarding sustenance it is written, ‘God who shepherds me…(Gen. 48:15)’.”
Babylonian Talmud tractate Beitzah 32b
Rabbi Nathan the son of Abba further said in the name of Rav, “Anyone who depends on another’s table, the world is dark to him, for it is said, ‘He wanders about for bread—where is it? He knows that the day of darkness has been readied for him (Job 15:23).’” Rabbi Chisda said, “his life is no life.”
