Demystifying the Mikvah (July 18, 2010)

Do you wonder:
  • Do men use the mikvah?
  • Who can use the mikvah?
  • What’s this about dipping dishes in the mikvah?
  • How long does it take?
  • Why dip?
  • Where does the water come from?

Sponsored by Congregation Beth David Adult Education Committee, the event is free and open to the public — men, women, and teens. RSVP by July 12.

Attendees will first gather in a meeting room in the JCC on the Campus to hear a talk about mikvahs, study some texts, and ask questions. Then they will take a tour of the Community Mikvah of Silicon Valley, on Campus. The Community Mikvah, which opened in January 2008, welcomes all Jews regardless of denomination or affiliation. A mikvah is “an intimate place for Jewish spirituality. A new threshhold into Jewish life, the Community Mikvah reclaims the ancient tradition of mikvah for the diverse needs of the 21st century Jewish community in Silicon valley” and beyond, according to the Mikvah’s brochure.

The mikvah has been used for ritual purification in water for thousands of years. It has the potential to speak to specific needs or transitional moments in life’s journey. Some possibilities include: conversion, marrige, bar or bat mitzvah, recovery from illness or completion of cancer therapy, milestone birthdays, loss/miscarriage, and many more.
